Word-Magick Marketing is an Invocation 🧙🏼‍♀️🔮✨

When I was recently reading Wicca: A Modern Practitioner’s Guide by Arin Murphy-Hiscock, I skipped straight to the chapter called “The Power of Words in Ritual”.

I was hoping to find something interesting - while expecting that I might just end up reading what I already know, but hey ho, it’s all affirmation…

What I discovered actually *blew my mind* 🤯🥳🤩🎉

“In a successful invocation, for example, the subject matter, the imagery and the technical care with which you select your words and set the rhythm will together create a pathway between the material worlds and the otherworld.”

Not because this was new information- but because this is *exactly* how I talk about copywriting when I’m coaching other writers! (And it’s how I talk about poetry, too).

For your marketing to truly create that bridge of connection between your heart and your reader’s soul, it gets to include all the elements of an invocation. It gets to *be* an invocation!

Soul-Centred Copywriting will focus on the *transformation experience* that your offer makes possible for your community. And it will *invoke* (or evoke) the *feeling* of that experience for your readers to sense through the content, the imagery, the language and the rhythm.

This way, your marketing material need not be icky and sickening. It becomes the first touch-point for your readers in experiencing the transformation for themselves. It’s a mini-transformation experience in itself that guides your community towards the deeper transformation you are creating through your offer.

It can be the first step in your potential new client’s initiation and transformation.

The people in your community are seeking the transformation YOU are offering. When you invite them to experience that transformation through your copywriting, they get to be one step closer to their own healing and transmutation. And you get to the satisfaction of knowing that your marketing has become part of your service - a way to reach a wider community with your offering and guide them towards the outcome they desire.

Writing my PhD in Utopian Poetics showed me what it means to be a writer. I wrote four books of poetry and a 50,000 word thesis, and I started journaling as a way to ground and heal myself.

While I was studying, I also wrote and maintained the Contemporary Small Press website, writing regular reviews of new fiction and poetry published by small presses. I was on the judging panel for the 2018 Republic of Consciousness Prize for literary fiction from the small presses. So I was reading a lot of great writing too. And I co-developed and taught a series of workshops called WELLBEING WHILE WRITING for doctoral researchers at the University of Westminster.

WELLBEING WHILE WRITING used practical techniques from Creative Writing pedagogy to support PhD students of all disciplines with the work of WRITING their thesis. I also used my knowledge and experience of yoga and meditation to provide MOVING & BREATHING FOR WELLBEING workshops to graduate students at the University.

I’ve been teaching English since 2004 and I’ve been teaching Creative Writing at the University of Westminster since 2017.
