📝 Writing Ritual for Release

If you’re any kind of sensitive you’ve probably been feeling the deep release of Samhain energies inviting you to let go for a while.

I’ve been feeling this since early October, and now we’re in Scorpio season (deep emotions, shadow sides) and the astrological point of Samhain is approaching on November 7th, the call to dive within for healing release is at its strongest right now.

This Thursday it’s the Dark Moon in Scorpio, too 🌑🦂

The time is ripe for release this week.

Here’s a simple yet powerful writing ritual for release that I’ve been using *a lot* recently:

🕯 Light a candle and set your intention to release what you are ready to let go. If you have a sense of what that is, name it. Otherwise, set a clear intention to let go of all that is no longer aligned with who you are.
📝 Now take as many blank pages in your journal as you need- and write, scribble, draw, release everything that is ready to move through you to be let go.
📝 Layer this up as much as possible - allow all the energy that you have been holding to move out of your body and onto the page. You could listen to music and move your body while you do this.
🕯 When you feel complete, burn the paper in the candle flame if it is safe & appropriate to do so.
🧘🏽‍♀️ Sit quietly for a moment and allow yourself to integrate this healing.

Writing my PhD in Utopian Poetics showed me what it means to be a writer. I wrote four books of poetry and a 50,000 word thesis, and I started journaling as a way to ground and heal myself.

While I was studying, I also wrote and maintained the Contemporary Small Press website, writing regular reviews of new fiction and poetry published by small presses. I was on the judging panel for the 2018 Republic of Consciousness Prize for literary fiction from the small presses. So I was reading a lot of great writing too. And I co-developed and taught a series of workshops called WELLBEING WHILE WRITING for doctoral researchers at the University of Westminster.

WELLBEING WHILE WRITING used practical techniques from Creative Writing pedagogy to support PhD students of all disciplines with the work of WRITING their thesis. I also used my knowledge and experience of yoga and meditation to provide MOVING & BREATHING FOR WELLBEING workshops to graduate students at the University.

I’ve been teaching English since 2004 and I’ve been teaching Creative Writing at the University of Westminster since 2017.
