These are my tried & trusted writing practices that I return to every time I write! I share them with clients and groups, and now I am sharing them with you too.


This video guides you through a complete writing practice in 3 parts. It correlates to the Spring phase of Initiation in the 4 Seasons of Writing & Thriving.

📝 You’ll need a pen and paper to hand for this practice.

In this Writing & Thriving practice, you’ll be guided to settle into your body and your breathing. Then you’ll be invited to take your pen and paper and move through the 3 part practice like this:

Part 1 – Pre-Writing. (3 minutes). In this part of the practice, I invite you to move your pen across the page without words, without intention, without analysis or judgement – without thinking and without stopping. Allow your pen to move where it will on the page. Notice the connection between your body, your breath and the movement of your pen on the page. Nothing else. Let everything else drop away while you stay present with this practice.

Part 2 – Free-Writing. (5 minutes). In this part of the practice, I invite you to move softly from pre-writing into free-writing, as you continue the practice of witnessing without judgement – just writing and noticing what’s there.

Part 3 – Focused-Writing. (7 minutes). In the final part of the practice, I invite you to write on a chosen theme or topic. It could be something that came up during your free-writing that you want to explore in greater depth, or it could be part of a project you want to write or you are writing. The choice of theme or topic is up to you! The invitation in this part of the practice is to continue the practice of witnessing without judgement, even as you write on a focused topic.

This is a great practice for overcoming writer’s block, or any feelings of fear, pressure, or procrastination that you experience with your writing. Especially if you have a project or a book to write!

Writing & Thriving doesn’t end there, of course. This is just the first season in the seasonal cycle of bringing your project to completion or publication – and letting go out into the world!

Writing my PhD in Utopian Poetics showed me what it means to be a writer. I wrote four books of poetry and a 50,000 word thesis, and I started journaling as a way to ground and heal myself.

While I was studying, I also wrote and maintained the Contemporary Small Press website, writing regular reviews of new fiction and poetry published by small presses. I was on the judging panel for the 2018 Republic of Consciousness Prize for literary fiction from the small presses. So I was reading a lot of great writing too. And I co-developed and taught a series of workshops called WELLBEING WHILE WRITING for doctoral researchers at the University of Westminster.

WELLBEING WHILE WRITING used practical techniques from Creative Writing pedagogy to support PhD students of all disciplines with the work of WRITING their thesis. I also used my knowledge and experience of yoga and meditation to provide MOVING & BREATHING FOR WELLBEING workshops to graduate students at the University.

I’ve been teaching English since 2004 and I’ve been teaching Creative Writing at the University of Westminster since 2017.
